A long time ago I had a vision of getting this revolver. I even bought 1/2" thick clear acrylic in a 12" by 24" panel. That would just sit for a couple years until I found it after moving and realizing I need to "pull the trigger", and buy the revolver, and build the case.
I bought it on gunbroker.com for just under $2,000 and got the materials to build that case at home depot for just under $100. Here is the final result:
I have a couple of LEDs inside that stay on as they are plugged in. It turned out pretty much like I envisioned.
There are three main barrel models S&W offers chambered in 500 Magnum:
- 3.5"
- 8.38"
- 10.5"
I'd like the longer one, thank you. The bigger the less recoil and more speed and power after leaving the muzzle.

Well let's go straight to 44 magnum.
44 Magnum (240 grain) and yes the recoil is significant. Made me nervous and curious what the difference is. Here is a video of the range experience:
I was happy with the result. The 500 magnum wasn't significantly more recoil than the 44 magnum. Maybe a little, but nothing dramatic.
Happy with the purchase. Not going to be shooting it a ton. One cylinder full of rounds will cost more than it costs to rent the lane. At $3.50 per round that's $17.50 for less than 45 seconds of shooting. However the difference really is in the amount of energy put into your target. When I'm shooting paper at the range, you simply can't tell the difference. You have to take it to an outdoor range to understand the difference.

If I were into hunting Bears, both the 629 (44 magnum) and 500 Magnum would do the job. The amount of power both of those demonstrate would stop big game very quick. Fun to shoot for sure. Hope to one day be able to shoot this at the cabin with some fun targets and not just paper.
