I bought this one for the Saturday pin shoots up at the WSA range. The pins are placed at the front of the table and you have to clear the table (about 3 feet). 9mm just wasn’t cutting it. In fact even the Henry Big Boy in 357 magnum for the latter half of the competition was barely making it.But this 44 magnum was just the ticket!
In doing research for this purchase the factors for my decision was:
- Cost of ammo (44 magnum, vs 45 colt, etc.)
- The stopping power of the caliber
- Once the Caliber is selected, what to look for in the gun:
- Reliability
- Cost
- Mount for red dot
- Reputation of maker
I was extremely pleased once I got to shoot this thing. I was very worried that the recoil would be massive and be almost painful, but I was pleasantly surprised that the recoil isn't that bad. I guess part of that is because the thing weighs a ton, and comes with a muzzle brake. I really love the rubber grips (similar to what I have on my S&W 929). And it came with a red dot on it so I didn't even have to worry about finding a proper mount and red dot to put on it. It's a nice red dot that can also display a green dot.
My first week shooting it and I was hitting it right on target and giving out "x"s like candy. (X's are when your opponent loses the head to head competition). It has a 7 1/2" barrel which increases the accuracy. During my research I read somewhere that this gun is actually used in hunter Bear!
I bought a few quick loaders to make getting it loaded faster without loading it one cartridge at a time. When you purchase it, it doesn't come in a bag, but a range bag built special for this revolver. It's very nice.
